exploring-the-reality-of-autonomous-driving-for-the-visually-impaired
Author: Ed Worrell
Date: April 05, 2024
Imagine this scene, I call or message my car. It glides up in front of my house, the side door sliding open as I approach. I tell the car that I'm heading to the grocery store, and it responds, asking which one I prefer and whether I'd like to play my "road rage" playlist. With a smile, I confirm, and we're off—no steering wheel, no pedals, just a comfortable seat to settle into. As we arrive at the store, my autonomous vehicle joins a neat line of others, patiently inching forward until it's my turn to disembark. The door slides open, and I step out, heading into the store for a leisurely shopping experience. Meanwhile, my car finds a parking spot, ready and waiting for me by the time I reach the checkout. As I approach the curb near the front door of the store, bags and white cane in hand. it greets me by name and inquires, "Where to next, Ed?" With a sense of seamless convenience, I hop back in, and we're on our way to the next destination.

Enabling Caller ID: Google Phone App
Author: Ed Worrell
Date: May 05, 2023
The Google Phone app recently got a much needed update with a new Caller ID announcement feature. For those unfamiliar, this is where whenever you receive an incoming call, it will be announced to you, such as the phone number and who is calling. This is a welcomed addition for Talkback users, as the last talking caller ID application stopped working over two years ago, and it's departure has left the visually impaired community without spoken caller ID for far too long now.

Getting Started: Android On Screen Braille Keyboard
Author: Ed Worrell
Date: May 01, 2023
Braille, traditionally, is a system of raised dots that make reading and writing accessible to the visually impaired. While there are external devices that make it possible to type something in braille on a phone, tablet or computer, it’s not exactly quick or a seamless experience. Google added the TalkBack braille keyboard to try and alleviate some of those complications. It's a software braille keyboard integrated directly into Android.
